Repeat of 9/11 prevented or just postponed?

War on TerrorFrom the Washington Post:

Student Arrested After Pilot Uniform Found

A university student from Egypt was ordered held without bond after prosecutors said they found a pilot’s uniform, chart of Memphis International Airport and a DVD titled “How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act” in his apartment.

The FBI is investigating whether Mahmoud Maawad, 29, had any connection to terrorists. He is awaiting trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number.

Maawad had ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, including DVDs titled “Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings,” “Airplane Talk,” “Mental Math for Pilots” and “Mastering GPS Flying,” FBI agent Thad Gulczynski testified.

Furthermore, Little Green Footballs has an unverified tip (posted just two hours ago) that a missile was fired yesterday at an America West airplane flying out of New York. The pilot and passengers are now being questioned by the FAA and FBI.

Remember that we’re at war? I’m sure our enemies haven’t forgotten.

[Edit: 9.18.05, 12:29 pm EDT] Michelle Malkin has an update on the possible missile firing at America West flight 17. She contacted Phil Gee at America West, who told her that the captain of flight 17 “took the initiative,” and reported an “irregularity” to air traffic control as the plane was ascending. The plane continued to Phoenix where FBI and other authorities met and interviewed all of the crew and passengers on the plane. The investigation is continuing.

When asked whether the irregularity the pilot referred to was a missle being fired, Gee replied that “nothing is confirmed.”

[Edit: 9.18.05, 7:43 am EDT] Michelle Malkin says a government official has determined by looking at radar records that what the people on flight 17 saw was birds. Must have been big fast birds.
